We know how fortunate we are to enjoy the outdoors cycling together. The MtLCCC members take pride in organizing a team each year for the 150 mile, two-day Bike MS event sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Since 2000, our members have raised over $100,000 forthis important organization.
One of our club’s earliest members, Eric Obye, began developing signs of MS in the late 1990s. A strong and relentless rider, he was dubbed Eddie “The Cannibal” Merckx for his ability to chase down and eat people up on the road. Despite the issues that he body was having, he still kept riding through it all and fighting to be the first up each climb. Even in the early stages, Eric completed several Bike Virginias and Bike MS 150s with his friends. Despite his fortitude, the MS slowly but steadily robbed him of his ability to ride his bike. The MtLCCC camaraderie was important, so when he could not ride, Eric would get together with the crew for coffee before they rode at 7 a.m.. Through it all, he handled his condition with serenity and never complained. He and his family eventually had to leave Pittsburgh for additional help with his care as he became confined to a wheelchair. He sadly passed away in 2011. We continue to celebrate Eric and others who are effected by MS by raising money and riding in their honor.
